The Barn

Dead Dog's Bone
“The Barn” was converted from an actual working Barn on the original Cowell Ranch in 1968. It was the first theater on the UCSC Campus.

Due to the inherent nature of the exposed infrastructure in a barn, it was also one of the first buildings on the campus to be certified for re-occupancy after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

The house seats 140 in an “L” shape around the stage.

In 2001 the lighting dimmer system was upgraded to 6 NSI 1.2K dimmer packs and an ETC Express 48/96 Console.

In 2009 the Theater Arts Department relocated the control booth which provided improved sightlines. With this relocation project, the department also upgraded sound and media systems.
