The UCSC African-American Theater Arts Troupe, directed by Don Williams, announces its 18th season with a production of "These People Can Fly." Adapted by Deborah Ferguson from the Virginia Hamilton short story.

The play is a collection of short stories drawn from West African folklore and African-American folktales passed on through generations. "These People Can Fly" is a journey through the legacy of slavery and the journey to freedom.

The UCSC African American Theater Arts Troupe (AATAT) serves to enhance the climate of the cultural diversity on the UCSC campus and in the community. The troupe focuses on the recruitment, recognition, and retention of under-represented students by providing a sense of belonging and by bringing in productions about people of color, encouraging the celebration of American diversity. Their main mission is to raise funds for the UCSC African American Theater Arts Troupe Fund. They have raised and awarded over $75,000 in scholarships to UCSC students who work with the African American Theater Arts Troupe. Awards are based on merit, financial need, and participation in the Theater Arts program.
