Mainstage

Mainstage Theater, Theater Arts Center (UCSC)

Faculty director Kirsten Brandt and a student cast present this gripping drama inspired by the infamous 1927 murder trial of Ruth Snyder, a New York housewife accused with her lover of killing her husband. "Machinal" was first produced on Broadway in the fall of 1928.

The pair were convicted and executed by electric chair in January 1928,
with Snyder becoming the first woman executed in New York State in the
twentieth century. The sensational story captured the attention of numerous writers, including Treadwell. The 1944 film noir "Double Indemnity" starring Barbara Stanwyck was inspired by the Ruth Snyder case.

A writer with a background in theater, Treadwell began her career in San Francisco and later moved to New York after covering World War 1 in Europe.
