Presented by:

Department of Performance, Play & Design

Disputes and Demurrals is a theatrical love letter to tabletop role-playing games (RPGs).

Written by UC Santa Cruz alumnus Justin Hammer, produced by UCSC's Barnstorm Theater Company, directed by undergraduate Ivy Johnson, and performed by students in the Theater Arts program.

Originally debuting on Zoom in the 2020 Barnstorm season as a radio play, a group of friends playing a friendly session of Dungeons and Dragons are forced to explain their motivations for playing the game when one of their own begins to question why they play at all. In the process, the characters discover more about themselves than they could have ever imagined.

Notice: this production contains the use of strobe lights, haze/fog, mature content, and discussions of gender dysphoria.
