In the Next Room, or the vibrator play
by Sarah Ruhl
Directed by Sequoia Schirmer
eXperimental Theater: March 1 - March 10
Set during the dawn of the electrical age when doctors used vibrators to treat female "hysteria".
A lively comedy set in the Victorian Era that explores how deeply human connections matter. Dr. Givings uses a new invention, the electric vibrator, to treat patients with "hysteria" by stimulating "paroxysms," or what we understand today are orgasms, but the characters in the show do not. Mrs. Givings starts to become suspicious of the sounds she hears when her husband is treating his patients. Her jealousy is the catalyst that sets in motion her need to become intimate with her husband in a way she never has before. Through the art of comedy, human intimacy and relationships of all kinds are explored and discovered.
“In the Next Room, or the vibrator play” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.
